Best Cleaning Tips to Keep the Spiders Out of Your Home

Don’t you just hate spiders?! They creep into your home and spin their webs overnight, often in plain sight. Removing spider webs is not a difficult task and should be included into your regular house cleaning routine, but did you know you could also keep spiders away with just a few ingenious tricks? Here is how to clean cobwebs and keep those nasty critters out of your home.

Removing Cobwebs

The easiest way to remove cobwebs is to use the vacuum cleaner to vacuum them out. For hard-to-reach places, you can also use a long-handled broom or mop with a rag wrapped around its end. Watch out for spider webs during your daily home cleaning and remove them as soon as you spot them. That will remove the visible spiders and their webs, but there are a few more things you should do to keep spider infestation at bay.

Preventive Measures

Before you can apply a spider repellent, you should take a few preventive measures to ensure that the entry points that insects and spiders use to come into your home are secured. Here are a few easy things you could do:

• Inspect your doorways, windows and any other places that spiders may be using to enter your home. If necessary, re-caulk any gaps in the window and door caulking. Check your mesh screens for holes and if you find any, repair them or replace the screen. After you eliminate spiders, this preventive measure will ensure they’ll have a hard time coming back.

• Tidy up the house. Thorough house cleaning and decluttering can go a long way in preventing spider infestation. Pay close attention to your kitchen as well as the food preparation and storage areas. Any place that attracts insects will attract spiders too. Regular kitchen cleaning is a must.

• Keep outdoor lights off at night. They attract insects which in turn attract spiders, so leaving outdoor lights on overnight can increase the spider population and make your problem harder to resolve. You can also use thick blinds to reduce the amount of insects stuck to your windows.

• Work on your yard. Domestic cleaning is one of the steps involved in preventing spider infestation, but an equally important one is proper landscaping work. If you have a garden, make sure that all the shrubs and trees in it are well groomed and all dead vegetation is removed in due time, as trees and other plants can easily become breeding ground for spiders.

Make Your Own Spider Repellent

Now that you’ve done some of the legwork, let’s see how you can create a homemade repellent to help you keep spiders away. It is pretty easy, actually, and there are plenty of natural products that act as spider repellents.

Peppermint oil, for instance, is an efficient and proven spider repellent. Add some peppermint oil to your preferred domestic cleaner and that will help you keep spiders out of your house. And your place will smell nice too!

Other products used for repelling spiders are citrus fruits. Spiders really dislike them. You can place a bowl of lemons, oranges, etc. in your kitchen or place a few citrus peels on the window sills and their smell will keep spiders out of the house.

Another natural spider repellent you can use is chestnuts – chestnuts won’t go bad for a long time and can be placed around your home to prevent spider infestation.
