Step-by-Step Guide to Thorough Mattress Cleaning

Choose the Proper Way to Clean Your Mattressclean mattress

Since we spend so much time lying on a mattress, one would think that it is the first thing that comes to our mind when we think of house cleaning. However, in reality mattresses are among the most neglected items when it comes to domestic cleaning. Maintaining a clean mattress is important for many reasons. It can gather a lot of dust and dirt during the years which is not good for your health. Here is the proper way to clean your mattress so that you are sure your bed is completely fresh and clean.

1. Start with vacuuming the mattress

Vacuuming is the thing you should start with. This way you can remove the dust and all of the debris that land on the mattress. You should vacuum it at least once a season. Remember to use only clean upholstery attachments as you don’t want to spread any additional dirt on the mattress.

2. Remove any bad odours

If your mattress doesn’t smell so good, you need to remove the bad smell as soon as possible. You can sprinkle baking soda over the bed. Rub the baking soda in gently. This is a great natural deodoriser that will help you neutralise the bad smell. If you want, you can add some essential oils to the baking soda as that will add a lovely scent to your mattress. You can go for a soothing scent such as lavender, sandalwood or chamomile. Essential oils are also naturally antibacterial.

You need to leave the baking soda mixture for a few minutes and then vacuum it with the vacuum cleaner.

3. Remove stains

Mattresses cannot be washed so you need to spot clean the stains. You can accidentally spill a drink or leave some finger prints. Not to mention that there probably are many sweat stains on your mattress as some people tend to sweat a lot while sleeping.

It will be better if you start treating the spot as soon as possible. This way you will prevent it for setting in. For liquid stains, use cold water and a clean towel. Blot the stain using a pressing motion. This way you can easily lift the stain. Don’t use a circular motion as it can make the stain even deeper and bigger and thus make mattress cleaning a tough chore.

If the stain is fresh, apply a mixture of baking soda, salt and water. Rub the mixture onto the stained area and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. Clean it by using cold water and a damp cloth. Simple products like baking soda and salt can be turned into great domestic cleaners.

Make sure the mattress is completely dry before using it. This way you can prevent mould from growing.

If the stains are too deep and won’t come out easily, you may consider hiring a professional cleaning company to take good care of your mattress. Professional cleaners will know exactly how to remove the deep-set stains and freshen up your mattress effectively.

4. Find a good mattress cover

A mattress cover can protect your mattress from getting dirty in the first place. You can easily take the cover off and wash it so that it is fresh and clean. This way you can save a lot of time in cleaning dirt, dust and stains from your mattress.

As you can see, it is not that hard to maintain a clean bed. You need to pay special attention to your mattress every now and then as it can gather a lot of dust, dust mites, dirt or stains. You don’t have to buy expensive home cleaning products. You can simply use cold water for stain treatment, as well as baking soda and essential oils for bad odour removal. Don’t neglect your mattress and have peace of mind that your bed is completely clean and fresh.
